A jazz band that takes music lovers on a roller coaster ride from the standards of the 1920’s and 1930’s, all the way to the nineties, naughties, and now.
Major To Minor
Hello. Thank you for deciding to read more about the saxy sounds of Major To Minor.
We like to call ourselves up and coming because it’s sounds better than saying we’re new. We started life with a little bi-monthly jazz night at The Restoration Public House in Sevenoaks in 2019, and it began to build a following. Things went from strength to strength, and we planned a little tour in 2020. Then Covid happened.
But now we’re back, and ready to put our joyfully jazzy and fabulously funky sounds in your ears once again.
Jamie Alexander Wilson
Our singer, Jamie Alexander Wilson, has been lucky enough to perform (definitely more than once) (twice) at the legendary Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in Soho, and has fan-girled his way through a couple of tunes as a guest of Natalie Williams Soul Family (if you haven’t seen them stop reading this immediately and book). He also has the privilege of singing the odd jazz tune whilst splashing around Europe on river cruise ships.
When back in the UK and fronting Major To Minor, his eccentric musical taste must bare most of the responsibility for the bands decades-spanning set list.
Your Night With Us
We love to perform a mixed set list, settling you in with the jazz standards of George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and the like. The music of the 1920’s and 1930’s really does seem to sound timeless.
Then, without you really noticing, we start to sprinkle in a few jazz covers of songs from the 1940’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s… The Drifters, Sonny and Cher, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder…
Then the musical roller coaster ride really picks up speed. By this point we’ve earned your trust, and you’ll go anywhere with us. You just love live music, so you don’t care that we’re crashing through the 1980’s with Prince, Candi Staton, David Bowie, Womack & Womack.
Who says the 1990’s was a terrible decade for music? Major To Minor make Lenny Kravitz, Oasis and the New Radicals sound as gorgeous as Gershwin. And then bam! Out of nowhere, we hit you with the 2000’s, we slap you round your earholes, with Pharrell Williams, Omar, Amy Winehouse. Hang on… Surely not Justin Bieber… It’s not acceptable for a jazz fan to love Justin Bieber, is it?
Don’t worry. It was our special night. No-one needs to know your mucky musical secret. You had a great time. And you find yourself wanting more…
Line Up
Major To Minor can configure in various sizes of line up depending on your venue or event.
SULTRY; for smaller audiences and spaces, a trio or quartet with vocals/keys/double bass/saxophone is a perfect mix for a laid back sound and wide ranging set list
SAXY; our standard set up is up to a six piece band with vocals/keys/double bass/drums/sax/sax/guitar, that can take you anywhere from joyful jazz to a full funky sound
SEXY; a musical megastorm and up to a ten-strong band with vocals/keys/double bass/drums/guitar/sax/sax/trumpet/percussion/backing vocals and more. We say we’re not a party band, but it’ll feel pretty partyish with this line up.
